The Pledge : transparency.coffee
For the sixth consecutive year, the Lemus family coffee is back with its charming aromas and great drinkability. As a filter brew, it offers a classic and comforting cup with notes of chocolate and nuts. It feels like taking a sip of hot chocolate. As an espresso, it pairs naturally with milk: its creamy texture and notes of dark chocolate and hazelnut create a delicious and versatile cup.
It was Juan Raul Lemus' grandfather who, in 1958, began to cultivate coffee; his father Baudelio followed in his footsteps 20 years later. Today, Juan Raul, his brothers, and his sister have joined the family business to take care of the 13 hectares divided into 4 parcels of land owned by the family.
The Lemus family has a long and rich history in coffee cultivation in Mataquescuintla, which has allowed them to develop much more infrastructure than the average producer with whom Semilla works, enabling them not only to process their own cherries but also those of neighboring producers.
Juan Raul and his family are inspiring activists, fighting for their people, the Xincas. They are part of Café Colis Resistencia, which is fighting against a Canadian mining company that is exploiting a silver mine on Xinca land and threatening their subsistence. They are also working to expand sales opportunities for the community beyond the local coffee market in Guatemala, which buys cherries at derisory prices.
We are very proud to support them through our partnership with Semilla, now for the fifth consecutive year! Their coffee is an essential part of our "Back to Origins" initiative, where $0.50 from each bag sold is directly returned to the producer.
