In August 2019, in the company of Maya from Crop to Cup, our importing partner, we travelled to the Brazilian coffee-growing region of Cerrado Mineiro to the Sao Luiz farm where we met Fausto do Espirito Santo Velloso and his two children Ana Cecilia and Lúcio Gondim, producers of our Joyeux Roger. This is our longest-standing relationship with a coffee farm, enabling us to offer you, for the sixth year running, this classic must-have!
The Cerrado Mineiro's new reputation for coffee has been earned, in many ways, by the work done at the Sao Luiz estate. Having been the first in the region to implement the natural pulped process 20 years ago, they have greatly increased the quality of their beans and thus contributed to the rise of Brazilian coffee in the sphere of specialty coffee. Now certified " Designation of Origin ", coffees from this part of the state of Minas Gerais are more easily traceable, allowing great transparency as to origin, farmers and production methods.
Ana left a career in marketing to return to the family business, bringing with her an understanding of what the market wanted. Lucio, trained agronomist, remained in charge of the farm's production. They form a perfect pairing of curiosity and ability and are an excellent example of the future of specialty coffees. Today, they look after 330 hectares of coffee trees, generating an average of 13,000 bags of green beans a year, half of which meet the criteria for high-quality coffee. They recognize that the quality of their beans is no stranger to the richness of the Cerrado Mineiro terroir, nor to the committed work of its dedicated team. Some employees have worked with the family for over 20 years, constantly striving to strengthen and modernize their practices.
They also work with Aequitas, a coffee production and export company founded by Yuki Minani, which is the perfect example of good practices in Brazil, ensuring that all stakeholders are treated with respect and receive the recognition they deserve. All in all, an impressive coffee, which we are proud to continue to offer you!
