Melese Wolde's farm in Shantawane gained a reputation for exceptional quality after winning a prestigious competition twice, hosted by one of the leading specialty coffee importers—an importer who, despite the accolades, never returned to buy the coffee.
Melese, a dedicated farmer at heart, shared his story with our importing partners from Crop to Cup, sheltered from the rain in his warehouse while his coffee beans rested safely under plastic tarps. He mentioned that he would have been content selling his cherries to private washing stations, but everything changed when the government granted him the opportunity to obtain his own export license in 2018, which he did. Now, his eldest son of his family of 6, assists him and manages the harvest.
