Augusto Ortega, now 58 years old, started out at an early age as a coffee farmer working alongside his father. Augusto's first lot on his family farm consisted of 500 trees, which he tended alone, selling his crops along with his family’s harvest. It’s at the age of 22 that he created Finca Las Asturias, now established for almost 40 years. In the village of Kennedy in the municipality of San Agustin, coffee farming was slow to take root. When Las Asturias was created in 1985, Augusto was one of the first to plant coffee in this specific micro-region.
In 2000, he joined the Los Naranjos Association as a means of gaining access to specialty coffee production. It was through this group that he managed to connect with Cafe Imports and sell his first batches of specialty coffee to American buyers. However, in recent years, members of this association have become dissatisfied with the transparency and connection offered to them. Augusto, former president of the Association, officially took the step in 2021 to stop selling to Cafe Imports and join Monkaaba.
Monkaaba is an empowerment initiative for small-scale coffee growers based in San Agustin and led by Esnaider Ortega Gomez. Many of the group's growers were either loosely or directly associated with the Los Naranjos group, and in recent years have begun to feel that they would like to develop greater autonomy and increase their involvement in the marketing and sale of their coffee. Monkaaba's aim is to help local growers not only to find a better market for their coffee, but also to invest in their knowledge and skills to ensure their future success. Now, Don Augusto continues to be a leader, but among his peers and family members with Monkaaba.
